It can be confidently claimed that a comprehensive history of the Sri Lankan Tamils, including the history of their territories (homeland), extending from the 1970s to modern times has not been published in the past three decades. This has led to an urgent need for a comprehensive history of the Sri Lankan Tamils, their territories, their politics, religion, language, socio-economics, art, literature and culture to be available to the reading public... However, it is clear that the Tamils' struggle for freedom has not been understood in its true light by those engaged in research, the majority of academics, politicians and ordinary people. This is largely the result of the absence of a comprehensive history of Sri Lanka Tamils based on historical evidence. The existing primary sources relating to the history of Sri Lankan Tamils in Sri Lanka were not sufficient to write such an historical work and the author, in order to gather incontrovertible evidence, visited various archives, libraries, state institutions and university research centres located in the countries that are closely related to the history of Sri Lankan Tamils. These include India, Portugal, the Netherlands, Britain and the United States of America. This invaluable material has been compiled for the first time in this book. This very detailed 576 page hard-backed study is the most comprehensive guide to the subject currently available. This book was named as the Best Non-fiction Publication of 2008 by Tamil Solai, University of Toronto, and has been listed as a reference text for the University of Calicut since 2010. This is an English language edition of the book. A Tamil language version is also available.
