Otherwise good and clean. - Schutzumschlag leicht berieben. Sonst gut und sauber. - The British Museum Yearbook is a new annual publication for all those interested in the fields of Art and Archaeology, especially those interested in the work and collections of the British Museum, and it is intended for the layman as well as the specialist scholar. Each year it will contain a number of major articles specially written around a central theme by members of the Museum staff and by outside contributors. Each volume will also contain short notes on a selection of recent acquisitions, and be fully illustrated in black and white, and include colour plates. The first Yearbook is on the theme of The Classical Tradition, and has eight contributors: Reynold Higgins on Magenta Ware ; a survey of this distinctive, and often very amusing, class of Hellenistic terracotta vases. The first comprehensive catalogue of the surviving examples is included. M. Jessop Price, in Architecture on ancient coins, looks at the extent to which the buildings of the ancient world are depicted on its coinage and draws some valuable and interesting conclusions. J. E. Curtis on Parthian gold from Nineveh; a descriptive and historical account of the jewellery of predominantly Hellenistic character found at Nineveh in 1852; it includes previously unpublished extracts from the correspondence of Sir Henry Layard, the distinguished nineteenth-century archaeologist, politician, and diplomat. R. A. G. Carson, in Gold and silver coin hoards and the end of Roman Britain, shows how some recently discovered hoards reflect the gradual disintegration of the Roman administration. R. H. Pinder-Wilson on The Malcolm celestial globe. The first modern account of this celebrated Islamic astronomical instrument throws new light on the relationship between Islamic and Greek astronomy. Ruth Olitsky Rubinstein on A Bacchic sarcophagus in the Renaissance. A member of the Warburg Institute studies the impact made upon Renaissance art and artists by a second- century a.d. Roman sarcophagus, now in the British Museum; and provides a fully illustrated catalogue raisonné of the paintings, drawings, and other works of art which reflect this. Nicholas Turner, in An attack on the Accademia di S. Luca: Ludovico David's L'Amore dell' Arte, examines the unpublished manuscript of this eighteenth-century Italian painter, who blamed the classical tradition for everything that he found wrong in the art of his day. Andrew Wilton, in Blake and the antique, assesses Blake's very personal response to the art of the classical world. A selective list has been made from the acquisitions of the British Museum in 1974, and forms a section of the Yearbook with short notes devoted to, among others, an Egyptian flint knife with a superbly carved ivory handle, a porphyry bust of one of the late Roman emperors, an important gift of Chinese lacquer, prints by early German masters, drawings by Bronzino and Sebastiano del Piombo, and a rare tenth-century a.d. English ivory carving of the Baptism of Christ. ISBN 9780714100456 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 711 Original cloth with dustjacket. Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag.
