L'industrie automobile a changé : pour satisfaire une demande de modèles très différents, le système de production de masse conçu par Henry Ford et ses successeurs n'est plus adapté.
Le système de production de Toyota repose sur deux concepts-clés : le juste-à-temps et l'auto-activation. Leur application permet de fluidifier la production donc de réduire les gaspillages. Pour être fluide, la production doit être fractionnée en petites séries.
La production de Toyota a un système de gestion original : les kanbans, qui sont des étiquettes attachées à chaque produit.
