For the first time, Stuart Harris deciphers the cache of clay tablets from Glozel. The language is Finnish, written in a script called Old European. The tablets describe a three month period during which tribes from Germany and Switzerland decimated the Aeduimi, the strongest tribe in France, and began their conquest of Gaul. In 1924, Emile Fraden discovered at Glozel near Vichy a trove of clay tablets and schist rings that describe the blackest period in the history of Gaul. In the spring of 63 BCE, all but two military chiefs of the Aeduimi in Gaul were poisoned at a wedding between Star-Dumnorix, Hand of the Aeduimi, and the daughter of Orgetorix, Great Hand of the Helvetii in Switzerland. The Aeduimi hoped the marriage would lead to peace along the border, but instead it led to their annihilation. Once the military chiefs were gone, eastern tribes swept into Gaul and cleared out the land. The person who carried out the Aeduimi massacre was Star-Dumnorix, Hand of the Aeduimi, who commanded spear maidens. During his own wedding feast at Lyon, spear maidens disguised as serving maids served poisoned beer to all the Aeduimi chiefs and their families, including his own mother. War managed to escape by hiding in a cart, while his brother Storm hid in a well. War-Divitiacus appointed new chiefs, organized resistance and tried to battle the invasion, but was utterly defeated without his chiefs. After the defeat, he rode to Rome to plead for help from the Roman Senate, who ignored him, then to Julius Caesar, who saw an opportunity. Five years later, Caesar led four Legions into Gaul, defeated the invading tribes and sent the survivors back to Germany. Caesar then turned the tables, conquered all of Gaul and crossed the English Channel.
