Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962) was a Croatian sculptor, painter, and architect who rose to international fame in the early 20th century. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and later in Paris, where he was exposed to the avant-garde movements of the time. Mestrovic's early work was heavily influenced by his Croatian heritage and mythology. He sculpted figures of saints, heroes, and everyday people with a powerful, expressive style. His later work incorporated more modernist elements, but he always retained a unique connection to his homeland. The Mausoleum of the Racic family was the first architectural work devised by Mestrovic and was built between 1920 and 1922. It is a small but beautifully detailed church that Mestrovic designed for the ship-owner family Racic. Ivo Racic, followed by his two children, died a sudden death in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu. At the request of Marija, the widow of Ivo Racic, Mestrovic constructed a votive cemetery chapel consecrated to Our Lady of Angels. The mausoleum has an octagonal layout with a prominent chapel in the shape of a Greek cross. The interior is rich with stylized sculptures and reliefs (Mother of God with the Child Jesus, angels as musicians, angel heads, Saint Rocco, the crucified Christ, portraits of members of the Racic family, floral motifs, etc.). They are characterized by their simplicity and elegance, and they blend seamlessly with the architecture of the church. N° de réf. du vendeur 20231116005
