"French physiologist who discovered and named the phenomenon of�osmosis�(the passage of�solvent�through a semipermeable membrane) and was the first to recognize the importance of green pigment in the use of�carbon dioxide�by�plant�cells."--Britannica. [++] ALSO: another milestone, this one by William PROUT, "Sur la Composition des Substances alimentaires simples, etc." the first French edition of his "On the ultimate composition of simple alimentary substances" printed in the same year, being the first scientific classification of foodstuffs as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water. "In 1827, [Prout] proposed the classification of substances in food into sugars and starches, oily bodies, and albumen, which would later become known as�carbohydrates, fats, and�proteins."
