El arabista Ambrosio Huici (Huarte, 1880) presentó en 1912 un trabajo demoledor al concurso con el que la Diputación Foral de Navarra pretendía celebrar el VII centenario de la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa (1212). Pese a elogiar la apabullante erudición de Huici, el jurado dejó desierto el concurso: la rigurosa investigación histórica llevada a cabo por el de Huarte tiraba por tierra la leyenda navarra sobre el protagonismo de Sancho el Fuerte en tan crucial batalla de la «Reconquista». Huici probaba que el ya muy mayor Sancho VII acudió a las Navas con unos 200 caballeros, por lo que el papel de los navarros fue escasamente relevante. Para la oficialidad, la osadía de Huici rayaba en lo intolerable al derruir el mito de las cadenas de Navarra, supuestamente arrancadas por el aguerrido monarca navarro en asalto a la tienda del rey moro Miramamolín. Reeditamos el trabajo sobre las Navas de Tolosa de Ambrosio Huici para reivindicar desde su tierra la figura de un arabista, en su tiempo respetado internacionalmente, cuya honestidad y valía intelectual le costó el ostracismo en su tierra. La obra supuso un hito en los estudios críticos sobre las fuentes árabes, auténtico punto de partida para la reconstrucción objetiva de una batalla elevada a la categoría de heroica gesta nacional. Roldán Jimeno, editor del libro, traza la andadura de nuestro arabista en un pormenorizado estudio que recorre su trayectoria personal e intelectual. La vida de Huici transcurriría a partir de 1912 en Valencia. Allí, represaliado por el franquismo, sería despojado de su cátedra y sufriría las duras consecuencias de la dictadura franquista.
