An early work on physical exercise by Peter Heinrich Clias, a student of the German gymnast, Johann Christoph Friedrich GustMuths. Captain Clias was superintendent of gymnastics at the Royal Military College and was hired in 1822 to organize physical regimen courses for the British Army and Royal Navy. The first edition of this work came out in 1823. The 9 folding plates show figures engaged in various exercises. The last plate deals with swimming. A good copy with some foxing and spotting to some of the page and plate margins. The plates are all very good with no chips or tears. The binding is worn but firm with some soiling to the cloth and some rubbing to the leather spine which has been rebacked with a new label. Scarce.

Erste Ausgabe des fundamentalen Werkes des Turnunterrichtes. - Clias, geboren 1782 in Bosten, war der Sohn eines "Käslin" aus Beckenried, der 1770 nach Amerika ausgewandert war und den Namen Clias annahm. Nach dem frühen Tode seiner Eltern wurde Clias in Holland erzogen. Erste Turnlektionen gab er in Holland und Deutschland. Von 1810 an wirkte er als Turnlehrer in Gottstatt bei Biel, dann am Gymnasium und am Waisenhaus in Bern sowie am Institut Fellenberg in Hofwil. 1821 gründete er im Berner Marzili eine Schwimm- und Badeanstalt und wurde noch im gleichen Jahr an die königl. Militär- und Seemannsschule nach England berufen. 1824 kehrte er in die Schweiz zurück, 1832-35 sass er im Berner Grossrat. In den 1840er Jahren war Clias in Frankreich tätig, ab 1848 lebte er wieder in der Schweiz, 1854 starb er in Coppet. Er zählt zusammen mit Johannes Niggeler und Adolf Spiess zu den Begründern des Turnunterrichts in der Schweiz. (HLS). - Einband mit Lichtrand. Einige Tafeln schwach fleckig. Sprache: deutsch.
