Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The raucous and surprisingly poignant story of a young, Russia-obsessed American writer and comedian who embarked on a solo tour of the former Soviet Republics, never imagining that it would involve kidnappers, garbage bags of money, and encounters with the weird and wonderful from Mongolia to Tajikistan.Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Siberia are not the typical tourist destinations of a twenty-something, nor the places one usually goes to eat, pray, and/or love. But the mix of imperial Russian opulence and Soviet decay, and the allure of emotionally unavailable Russian men proved strangely irresistible to comedian Audrey Murray. At age twenty-eight, while her friends were settling into corporate jobs and serious relationships, Audrey was on a one-way flight to Kazakhstan, the first leg of a nine-month solo voyage through the former USSR. A blend of memoir and offbeat travel guide, this thoughtful, hilarious catalog of a young comedians adventures is also a diary of her emotional discoveries about home, love, patriotism, loneliness, and independence.Sometimes surprising, often disconcerting, and always entertaining, Open Mic Night in Moscow will inspire you to take the leap and embark on your own journey into the unknown. And, if you want to visit Chernobyl by way of an insane-asylum-themed bar in Kiev, Audrey can assure you that theres no other guidebook out there. (Shes looked.) Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Albert Lippincott is a thirty-year veteran of the Nestor, New York, Post Office - a letter carrier extraordinaire, aggressively cheerful, obsessively efficient. But Albert has a few things to hide. His unfortunate habit, for instance, of reading other people's mail; his abortive university career, complete with a crackpot theory, a nervous breakdown and a thwarted attempt to bite out his professor's eye; a disastrous marriage, grotesquely self-absorbed parents and a sexually ambiguous entanglement with his melodramatic sister. And then there's his attempt to reform the postal system of Kazakhstan and his complicated relationship with his cats. And now his supervisors are on to his letter-opening compulsion, there's a throbbing pain under his left arm and he is finding it increasingly difficult to contain his emotions. Things are closing in on Albert, and he is forced to confront, once and for all, his life's failures. Albert Lippincott is a brilliant creation: flawed, damaged, but fiercely perceptive, and desperate to make meaning out of the mess of existence. He, and Lennon, hold us captive with a wild narrative voice fuelled by desperation and touched by madness. A blackly comic epic - a voyage through small-town America, and through the interior life of its most neurotic mailman. Couverture souple. Etat : Comme neuf.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Scarce hardcover, vi + 136pp + 4 pages of glossy b&w plates, map endpapers, NOT ex-library. Interior is clean and bright, untanned, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Faint external marks on upper page edges. Gently shelfworn, unclipped and untorn dust jacket. -- In 1939, Barbara Porajska was nine-years-old, living in eastern Poland with her mother, her police chief father and her fourteen-year-old sister. Theirs was a comfortable, leisured life. Then, in September, while Poland was struggling against the German invaders from the west, the Red Army invaded from the east, occupying and annexing that part of her homeland. Her father missing, their possessions confiscated or stolen, she, her mother and her sister were transported like cattle, as were hundreds of thousands of Poles, deep into central Soviet Asia. This direct, simple and moving account of the hardships and deprivation they survived is an eloquent testimony to the abiding resilience of the Human Spirit. For two appalling years, courage and human kindness endured against the systematic cruelty of Stalin's Russia until, reunited as a family, they were able to leave the Soviet Union for a new life in a refugee village hacked out of the forests of Uganda in East Africa.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Conjuring images of nomadic horsemen, spectacular monuments, breathtaking scenery and crippling poverty, Central Asia remains an enigma. Home to the descendants of Jenghiz Khan's Great Horde, in the nineteenth century the once powerful Silk Road states became a pawn in the 'Great Game' of expansion and espionage between Britain and Russia, disappearing behind what would become known as the 'Iron Curtain'. With the collapse of the USSR, the nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan were born. Since independence, Central Asia has seen one civil war, two revolutions and seven dictators. An insightful mix of travel, history and reportage, in Does it Yurt journalist Stephen M. Bland takes the reader on a voyage of discovery. Travelling to a desert sea, a collapsed Russian gas rig daubed the 'Gate to Hell' and along the 'Heroin highway' atop the roof of the world, the author sets out to explore these lands, unearthing the stories of the people and places behind this fascinating region. Written sharply, vividly? If you're looking for an antidote to chirpy travel-guide descriptions of Central Asia, then this is the book for you.' - Sam Tranum, author of Daily Life in Turkmenbashy's Golden Age. 'Packed with insights into every corner of the region.' - Paul Wilson, Trailblazer Guides writer and author of The Alphabet Game. 'Weaves together my favourite elements of a travelogue: historical context and current observations mixed with a dry sense of humour and amusing anecdotes. Does it Yurt will result in my journey to Central Asia being that much more rewarding.' - Ric Gazarian, author of 7000KM To Go and Hit the Road India; top 500 travel blogger. 'Stephen M. Bland's writing captures the magical whirlwind flavour of Central Asia in this very perceptive and insightful book. Those who have visited this wonderful part of the world will instantly recognise and reminisce on the many stories of potholed journeys by shared taxi, generous encounters with friendly locals and the inevitable run-ins with bumbling bureaucracy. Those who haven't yet visited will be inspired to book their next adventure as soon as they can put the book down. A thrilling ride from start to finish.' - Nick Rowan, author of Friendly Steppes: A Silk Road Journey 'Deserves to be shared among friends, as well as having a designated place on your shelves. Stephen M. Bland succeeds in bringing the region alive, and his story is an interesting and hard-to-decline invitation to join in his travels.' - Eugenette Morin, writer.

Good. Marginal mend just impacting border on the right; some creases. Else very good. Size 11.25 x 13.5 Inches. This is a 1740 Italian edition of Isaac Tirion's map of Tartary, or Russia in Asia. This is one of the few obtainable derivative maps to be based upon the little-known but groundbreaking cartography of Phillip Johann von Strahlenberg, created while he was a prisoner in Tobolsk. The Source Tirion's work, presented as 'drawn from the latest observations,' has often been ascribed, likely in error, to Guillaume De l'Isle. This map does not at all resemble De l'Isle's map of the same area. Rather, Tirion's 1732 original was indeed drawn from the truly state-of-the-art 1730 map of Phillip Johann von Strahlenberg. A cursory comparison between this map, those of De l'Isle, and the 1730 Strahlenberg makes the connection plain, on the strength of its depiction of the north and east coastlines. The shared detail of the Mare/Lacus Kamischnor (probably the wetlands of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan) and the identical treatment of Lake Baikal on both maps confirms the connection. Tirion's choice of source was wise: Strahlenberg's 1730 map was the largest, most groundbreaking, and unique map of Russia to appear in the first half of the 18th century. Its presentation of a potential Northeast Passage, and its pre-Bering mapping of the Bering Strait made it among the most compelling works of the mapping of Asian Russia. Strahlenberg's enforced proximity to his subject (owing to his decades as a prisoner of war in Tobolsk) made his work all the more authoritative, improving sharply on the work of the area produced in the 17th century by Witsen, and the early 18th-century efforts of De l'Isle. The Dezhnev Anomaly or Witsen's Peninsula Nicolas Witsen's mapping does not disappear in Strahlenberg's work; for example, Witsen's Peninsula - here named ' Capo Suetoinos ' - can be seen extending from Siberia's northeastern coast just south of the Kolyma River. The Mysterious Island of Puchochotski One of the hallmarks of the Strahlenberg map appearing here is Puchochotski Island - the crescent shaped island at the easternmost extreme of this map. This island is mapped on only a few obscure Russian manuscripts of the early eighteenth century and was probably related to the discoveries of Petr Popov, who was sent from Anadyrsk to explore the Chukchi Peninsula in 1711. Popov returned with indigenous reports of a large island one day's voyage east of the Peninsula - without question representing Chukchi knowledge of the Behring Strait and Alaska: thus - Puchochotski Island is actually one of the first depictions of Alaska, based on native report. An Unsung Map Leo Bagrow had lamented in Imago Mundi that: It is to be regretted that Strahlenberg's map has so far not been studied to any large extent. After Remezov, it is the second most important source of historical geographical information about Siberia. Yet it did not have a great influence on maps of the following period and, in a way, stands apart. And yet, here in Tirion's map and its Italian copy, is evidence that Strahlenberg's cartography was in fact disseminated and presented as 'the latest observations,' albeit failing to apply the long-suffering Strahlenberg's name to any of it. Publication History and Census This map was composed and first printed by Isaac Tirion in 1732. The present copy was engraved in Venice for inclusion in Giambatista Albrizzi's 1740 Atlante Novissimo, Che Contiene Tutte Le Parti Del Mondo. We see one example of the separate map in OCLC. The Atlante is well represented in institutional collections. References: OCLC 638249688 (miscataloged as De l'Isle).

Very good. Some water staining and creases, else an attractive example with original outline color. Size 14 x 18.5 Inches. This is Carl Ritter and Heinrich Mahlmann's 1839 map of the Altay region of central Asia. This map was compiled at a time when Europeans knew little of this region, but compiles the tracks of European explorers who, between 1771 and 1829, explored the mountainous region. It represents a revolutionary amalgam of explorers' accounts and speculation expounded through the lens of Ritter's German Romantic theories of the Earth as a 'cosmic individual'. A Closer Look Coverage embraces an area incorporating primarily modern-day Altai Krai and the western part of the Altai Republic. Kazakhstan lies to the southwest. The map notes the borders of the Russian and Chinese Empires, as well as the administrative regions of Kolyvan, Barnaul, Kuznetsovo, Charysh, and Ust-Kamenogorsk (Oskemen, in Kazakhstan.) The map is a dense amalgam of the accounts of the mainly German and Russian explorers and naturalists who had ventured into this tenuously understood and hitherto poorly mapped region. Its detail ranges from post roads, cities, fortresses, and other defenses to remote, outposts, villages, mines, factories, yurts, and even abandoned villages. The cartographers were assiduous in naming their sources, which appear in a table, along with voyage dates, in the upper right. That being said, the exceptional density of cartographic information presented belies the fact that this region was then only tenuously understood and poorly mapped. Publication History and Census This map was compiled by Carl Ritter and Heinrich Mahlmann. It was engraved by Mahlmann and published by Carl Ritter and Franz August von Etzel. It is extremely scarce, with no history on the market. We do see examples at the David Rumsey Collection, the University of Milwaukee, the British Library, Utrecht University, and Leiden University. Very good. Slight toning due to fold metric. Size 37.5 x 42.25 Inches. This is an impressive large scale 1873 Russian-language map of central Asia compiled by the Imperial Russian Topographic Depot for the 1873 Invasion of Khiva - with manuscript annotations detailing a British spy's travels. Coverage extends from the Black Sea to Nepal, and the Persian Gulf to the Bay of Bengal. The area covered includes the Caspian and Aral Seas, the Persian Gulf, and the modern-day Central Asian nations of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as parts of Russia, China, and northern India. As such, the map captures the peak of Russian expansionism in Central Asia - highlighting the region that became Russian Turkestan and later Soviet Central Asia. A Spy's Voyage in Manuscript The map chronicles a voyage in red and brown manuscript from Saratov (СаÑаÑоР) to Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent, with a detour to the Amu Darya or Oxus River. Based upon the manuscript notes, which are in English, we can assume that the traveler was a native English-Speaker, but well connected with Russian authorities and likely fluent in Russian. Distances between points are marked in Versts, a now obsolete Russian measurement roughly equivalent to a kilometer. Our mysterious traveler began his voyage at Saratov, from 1870 the last stop on the Ryazan-Ural Railroad. From Saratov he traveled south, hitting the north shore of the Caspian Sea near Astrakhan before orienting southeast, skirting the western shore of the Aral Sea, from which point he follows the Amu Darya River, bypassing Russian controlled Khiva, striking instead for Bukhara. He moves eastward from Bukhara to Samarkand, taking a southernly detour to the Amu Darya, reaching the river near Termez, at the border with British controlled Afghanistan, before returning to his route and heading east to Samarkand and from thence northeast to Jizzakh and Tashkent. We have been unable to correlate this journey with any known voyage, but very few English speakers traveled through this region in the 1870s. The voyage marked here somewhat (but not exactly) matches they travels of Eugene Schuyler (1840 - 1890). Schuyler was an American diplomat serving the American legation at Saint Petersburg. He received a special dispensation from Russian authorities to visit newly conquered Central Asia. His 8-month voyage caused a sensation in Europe and America, documenting for the first time a world near-unknown to anyone except Russians, Persians, and the indigenous population. Accounts of Schuyler's travels were published by the National Geographic Society, but he also issued a long confidential report for the U.S. Department of State. The only other major 1870s voyage to this area by an English speaker was undertaken by American New York Herald reporter Januarius Aloysius MacGahan (1844 - 1878), who heard about the invasion of Khiva in St. Petersburg and, evading Russian authorities, crossed the deserts east of the Aral Sea in time to witness the fall of Khiva - during which he was embedded with Russian forces and sanctioned by the Russian General, Kaufmann. While the voyage depicted here is not that of Schuyler or MacGahan, the significance of both voyages underscores just how little known and visited this region was for English speakers. Instead of a well-publicized and sanctioned voyage like Schuyler's, or intrepid reporting like MacGahan, the travels marked here are of a more clandestine nature, representing British spycraft following the Russian seizure of Khiva in 1873 - which also led to the publication of this map, a major revision and advancement over the 1863 first edition. This explains why the traveler steered clear of Khiva, which would otherwise have been a natural stop. Spycraft also explains the curious detour to the Amu Darya River en route from Bukhara to Samarkand - the traveler was meeting with British agents in Afghanistan to pass on his reconnaissance before continuing on his mission. 1873 Invasion of Khiva The Invasion of Khiva was a power-play in the Great Game that consolidated Russian suzerainty over the entirety of Central Asia north of Persia and Afghanistan (North of the Atrak and Amu Darya/Oxus Rivers). Subjugating Khiva was no minor challenge - Russia met with failure in two prior invasions. The city, located in a desert oasis some 200 miles south of the Aral Sea, had strong natural defenses. To assure troop movements and maintain logistical channels, Russian forces spent 3 years meticulously mapping approaches to Khiva before launching their campaign. When Russia finally invaded, five separate armies marched simultaneously, two from the east, and three from the west, consisting of some 12,000 soldiers in total. The armies converged at Khiva on June 7, 1873 and, after minimal fighting, the city surrendered on June 10. The successful conquest consolidated Russian power north of the Amu Darya or Oxus River. Turkmenistan, located to the south of the Amu Darya, fell 11 years later in 1884, securing Russian hegemony over the Trans-Caspian. The Great Game 'The Great Game' was a diplomatic confrontation between the British and Russian Empires over Afghanistan and other territories in Central and Southern Asia. The conflict, rooted in long-standing animosity between Russia and Britain, revolved around Afghanistan, which, while lacking significant resources of its own, was strategically situated. For its part, Russia feared Britain making commercial and military inroads into Central Asia, an area long within the sphere of influence of St. Petersburg. Britain, conversely, feared Russia making gains in India, 'the jewel in the crown' of British Asia. The escalating tensions led to several wars and proxy wars: the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839 - 1842), the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845 - 1846), the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848 - 1849), and the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878 - 1880), along with the Russian annexa.
