Er gilt als Begründer des ethnologischen Strukturalismus. . Werk - Strukturalismus: Die Begründung des französischen Strukturalismus wird oft datiert auf das Erscheinen von Lévi-Strauss' Analyse von Verwandtschaftssystemen 1949. Die Grundidee ist: ein durch Heiratsregeln gesteuertes Tauschsystem ersetzt natürliche Verwandtschaften durch soziale Allianz mittels reziproker Verpflichtung. Heiratsregeln werden unterschieden nach Heiratsgeboten (die Gesellschaft empfiehlt, aus welcher Gruppe geheiratet werden soll) und Heiratsverboten (es ist nur vorgeschrieben, aus welcher Gruppe nicht geheiratet werden darf).[4][5] Das signifikant häufigste Vorkommen einer bestimmten Form des Frauentauschs" kann dabei, so die These, durch deren bevorzugte systematische Stellung erklärt werden. Es handelt sich um die Kreuzkusinenheirat, die Heirat eines Mannes mit der matrilateralen Kreuzkusine (der Tochter des Mutterbruders). Diese erzeuge die stabilsten gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse. Die Heirat ist nah genug, damit die Pflicht sozial wirken kann, aber weit genug weg, damit das Inzesttabu gewahrt bleibt. Damit ist der Avunculus, der Mutterbruder (Oheim), besonders bedeutsam. Dieser Punkt wurde u. a. von Pierre Bourdieu kritisiert, der empirisch in Nordafrika diesen Heiratsfall als nur einen unter vielen ausmachte. So kam z. B. die Heirat mit der matrilateralen Parallelkusine (der Tochter der Mutterschwester) in seiner Stichprobe häufiger vor. Die Orientierung an gesellschaftlichen Tauschprozessen hat einen Vorläufer in Marcel Mauss. . Anthropologie und Kulturwissenschaft: Lévi-Strauss verglich die Beziehung zwischen der Linguistik und der Sprache mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Ethnologie und der Kultur und postulierte die Übertragbarkeit von linguistischen Konstrukten auf die Ethnologie. Die Kultur verhalte sich wie die Sprache: Nur ein Außenstehender könne die ihr zugrunde liegenden Regeln und Strukturen erkennen und interpretieren. 1958 veröffentlicht Lévi-Strauss seine Aufsatzsammlung zur Strukturalen Anthropologie". Wie in seiner Studie zu den Heiratsbeziehungen legt er dabei die Methode zugrunde, sich an systematischen Strukturen zu orientieren, bei welchen es nur auf das Gefüge der Relationen ankommt, so dass diese auch auf völlig andere Elemente übertragbar sind. In ähnlicher Weise hatte der Prager Strukturalismus von Jakobson und anderen vertreten, dass die Elemente, welche die Phonologie untersucht, ihren Sinn nicht aus sich selbst, sondern durch das sie ordnende System gewinnen. Ziel des Anthropologen sei, durch Analyse kultureller Phänomene mittelbar die kognitiven Strukturen menschlichen Denkens zu verstehen und die universalen Denkprinzipien in den verwendeten Klassifikationen und Bedeutungssystemen herauszuarbeiten. Seine anthropologischen Studien machten ihn zu einem vehementesten Kritiker des religiösen Totemismus: In den vielfältigen Formen mythischer Mensch-Tier-Beziehungen sah er lediglich soziale Aspekte. Die verschiedenen spirituellen Schutzgeist"-Vorstellungen müssten von totemistischen Konzepten getrennt betrachtet werden. . The result was an in-depth study of the evolution of Lévi-Strauss' thinking and the turn of Pouillon's interest from philosophy, that he studied at University, to ethnology. Revue française d'anthropologie" that was established by Claude Lévi-Strauss, Emile Benveniste and Pierre Gourou. In his book "Anthropologie structurale" Lévi-Strauss explains his theory on culture, that he considers as a system of symbolic communication, to be investigated with methods that others have used more narrowly in the discussion of novels, political speeches, sports, and movies. First Edition. The lasting impact of this work on anthropology and the social sciences at large cannot be understated enough. With this book, Levi-Strauss almost singlehandedly revolutionized anthropological study by pioneering the "structuralist" discipline. He did this by arguing that structures exist across all cultures, and that it is this pervasive commonality that renders each culture equal to the other. This emphasis on a horizontal ordering of culture completely reset a discipline which could not let go of a vertical ordering - one that placed Europe at the top. Here, Levi-Strauss's method treats social behavior as a phenomenon akin to a language. In the same way we use language to make meaningful statements without consciously referencing grammar, we are able to behave in a sensible way without consciously referencing structures. Like grammar, social structures operate as the invisible boundaries that allow coherence and meaning to emerge. Going beyond this point, Levi-Strauss asserts that cultures can only exist insofar as there is a deep structure embedded within it, and that anthropological study should focus on the interaction of the structure with cultural behavior, not just on the behavior itself.This is a manner of study still practiced to this day. First editions, first impressions, of the author's groundbreaking initial collections of his works, both presentation copies, inscribed to the social anthropologist and ethnologist Sir Raymond Firth on the half-titles, "A Raymond Firth, avec l'amitié de Claude Lévi Strauss" and "To Raymond Firth, with warmest regards, Claude Lévi Strauss". Firth (1901-2002) was a lecturer at the London School of Economics and became particularly well known for his study of Maori culture. Lévi-Strauss admired Firth's work and contributed to the papers read at the celebration of Firth's life and works in 2004. The six cuttings laid in to Anthropologie structurale contain reviews of ethnographic, economic, and anthropological works by Raoul and Laura Makarius, Serge Latouche, and Bernard Delfendahl, as well as the front cover for the 1973 catalogue for Editions Anthropos. The five documents laid in to Deux are: a) Three-page signed typewritten draft of Firth's review of D. M. Goodfellow's Principles of Economic Sociology (1939), published in the Royal Institute of Philosophy's journal (1941), annotated by Firth. b) Four-page printed review of La Pensée sauvage by Nur Yalman from the American Anthropologist. c) Note card from Lévi-Strauss to Firth dated 15 May 1968. d) Note card from Firth to unknown recipient, dated 24 May 1977. e) Note on paper, possibly in Firth's handwriting, discussing the translation of the title of Lévi-Strauss's La Pensée sauvage. f) Note on yellow paper, possibly in Firth's handwriting, laid in to p. 139, on the distinction between formalism and structuralism. Lévi-Strauss is notable for exporting structuralism from France and giving it new international prominence. He based his school of thought on the notion that "underneath the tremendous diversity of cultural practices there are universal processes of thought. All humans have a mental structure that leads them to think in certain ways and that underlies all cultural behaviour. The reason cultures differ from one another is that a society's history and environment mould people's way of seeing and understanding reality. [Lévi-Strauss] tries to penetrate these differing surface manifestations to get at the basic mental structure that underlies them. For Lévi-Strauss, structural anthropology tries to show how these surface phenomena reflect the underlying universal structures of thought" (Moberg, p. 269).
