"The Bible Moralisee was produced in the first half of the 13th century, and contains over 1000 illuminated medallions accompanied by textual extracts and commentaries that act as captions to the illustrations, revealing the relevance of the Bible to contemporary life." [Gerry Guest]. The original manuscript, held in Vienna, begins with Genesis and ends part way through Kings. The stunning full page frontis illustration shows God on a gold ground creating the universe out of chaos using a compass, followed by over 1000 miniatures illustrating various Bible passages. It is thought that Blanche of Castille (wife of Louis VIII, 1188-1252 ) may have commissioned and owned it but that has not been proven. Nevertheless, it was obviously made for a very wealthy patron, as the manuscript Is exquisitely luxurious. Condition of this set is very good. The brown (silk or percaline) cloth slipcase is in very good condition with minimal shelf wear. The tawny cloth bound commentary volume has a few very small stains on the rear of the cloth, otherwise very good. The leather bound manuscript has some very light shelf wear to the extremities, interior is near fine. A beautiful set. Heavy for international shipping. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall.
