Brown pebble-grain cloth with gilt and black design on the cover, gilt title on spine, tissue guard for frontispiece is intact, minor edge wear rubbing, top edge of spine is sightly more worn, all edges gilt, binding is tight and illustrations are complete and beautiful, no inscriptions or owner marks, in very good + condition.Gustave Dore (1832 - 1883) was a french artist, sculptor, illustrator and more who worked primarily with wood engraving. Dore was a very prolific artist and his illustrations are well-known. He had many titles published using his bible illustrations, including The Child's Bible, The Bible Gallery, Bible Stories and Scenes for Young People, etc. For this book, this is the first edition/second printing, derived using the reference book by Malan. This edition is a collection of 100 engravings illustrative of the bible but made for the American market in a smaller and less costly version as well as having a briefer analysis of each design. Latest date found of 1877. Massive oversize 10 1/2" x 12 3/4" x 4 1/2" design weighing in at over 15 lbs. Smooth, tooled and embossed, dark brown conditioned leather boards with embossed foliar cover design at front and spine, moderate shelf, corner wear, nick, rub. Four raised bands at spine. Pages very good or generally near fine; several rich in illuminated color. Few with moderate discoloration; one found with open tear apprx. 1.5 x 1.5" at edge. Found four-leaf stem (likely larger than clover) in few places in volume; rather amazingly has not left mark or tanning. Also, a loose cloth bookmark or similar set in: "Esther". Two wonderfully crafted and functioning brass clasps hold volume shut and straight. Presentation at front, Birth, Marriage, Death and Memorandum pages at center are without writing. Gilded text block at all sides with red uniquely incorporated at angles. Bind good; hinges reinforced. Profusely and generously illustrated throughout with color maps, rich color and b&w, and impressive artistic depictions by Gustave Doré among many other masters of pen and brush. Rare near very good, clean example. Bound in full leather, wonderfully blind-stamped decorations. All edges gilt. Full page Gustave Dore illustrations throughout. The Bible is in near fine condition. Two small spots of water damage on the front board. Several abrasion marks on the rear board. Light scratches on the gilt edges of the textblock. A stunning edition, would make for an exceptional gift or acquisition. This King James Version bible is beautifully illustrated with clear and slightly larger font for easy reading. Contemporary full maroon morocco, sides ruled with prominent gilt-foliate border, spine with raised bands and gilt-decorated compartments, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Three title-pages for the Old Testament, the Apocrypha, and the New Testament, all printed in red and black. 238 full-page wood-engraved plates after Gustave Doré. Light rubbing to boards along extremities, a pair of ring marks on upper cover of vol.2, contents clean and crisp save for the very occasional spot, generally a superb copy in handsome contemporary bindings. "In the 1870s, The Doré Bible was perhaps the most treasured (and expensive) book in the world" (Malan, 81). Certainly, it proved a milestone in Doré's career. Doré's illustrations for the Bible (first published in French in 1866) were a great success, and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London which led to the founding of Doré Gallery in Bond Street, London. Doré's "Bible was enthusiastically sponsored by one of the greatest French publishers of illustrated books of the day, Mame of Tours Its original reception was truly remarkable A second edition of the Bible was called for almost at once Editions appeared in almost every European country One of the first off the mark was an English edition from Cassell, Petter and Galpin, 1867.
