Hardcover. Etat : Fair. 1st Edition. This is a scarce copy of Ulenberg's Bible. Volume 1 (Old Testament) of 2. Lacking New Testament volume. It is undated but I believe it to be the 1630 1st edition as it was printed at Cologne by Johan Kreps. Period vellum binding in good condition but stained and dirty due to age. Lovely clasps in tact. The title page has ink damage with some loss (please see images as they form an important part of the description). A little worming in gutter to front and rear but this is minimal and does not affect the text. Varied foxing and staining throughout - some quite severe. I think this is just the variation in how the paper has aged but cannot be sure. Text is still legible. Binding appears to be firm. Title in ink manuscript to spine "Biblorum Ulenbergii Pars Prima". A rare and important bible which formed the basis for the Mainz German bible. I cannot find another for sale at present.

One of only two editions of Feyerabend's renowned version of the Leuven Vulgate, with splendid woodcut illustrations by Swiss-German artist Jost Amman (1539-1591), one of the leading book illustrators of his time. Although both editions are considered to be among the most beautifully illustrated bibles of the 16th century, the present edition is the most copiously illustrated of the two, as it contains seventy more woodcuts. It is also quite rare on the market, as we have only been able to trace two other copies in sales records of the 21st century.Sigmund Feyerabend (1528-1590), the publisher of the present work, is known for working closely with book illustrators. He was the first publisher to commission a Bible edition that was uniformly illustrated by one artist. His first such publication was a Luther Bible from 1560, which contained circa 150 woodcuts by Virgil Solis (1514-1562), an important and highly prolific book illustrator from Nuremberg. After his death, Feyerabend continued to work with Solis' student, woodcut artist Jost Amman. Although publishers increasingly turned towards the new technique of copper engraving, Amman's work was still sought after for its high quality and minute details. In 1566, he produced 128 beautiful woodcut illustrations for Feyerabend's first edition of the Leuven Vulgate, which was a folio. It became so successful, that it led to a lifelong business partnership between the two men. When Amman was asked for the second edition, which is the present work, he made a completely new set of illustrations, as this second edition was a smaller size. Whereas the illustrations for the first edition were rectangular, the new ones are all set within an elaborate oval frame. They are also more numerous, as Amman created seventy more. These illustrations became so popular, that they were re-used by other publishers for their bibles. The present edition, however, is the first in which this second set of woodcuts appeared.Contemporary or slightly later annotations in Latin on the front and back endpapers, a 17th-century owner's inscription on the title page. The boards are somewhat rubbed and soiled, affecting the clarity of the blind-tooling on the back board. The work is slightly browned throughout, the lower corners of leave 265 and 266 in part 1 are torn, without affecting the text, contemporary and later annotations in the margins of some of the leaves in both brown and red ink, both parts without the final blank leaf. Sebastian Schmidt (1617-1696) was a Lutheran theologian: he spent forty years working on a complete translation. In his preface (in Latin), the editor draws attention to the importance of the annotations by Swedenborg in this copy. Later bookplate (1907) of Claude Toby. Folio, [five volumes]. Bound in publisher's original full brown morocco. Each volume with five raised bands, lightly rubbed, gilt compartments, and title in gilt along spines. Silk endpapers. Top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Solid text blocks, all vibrant and fine. Housed in original slipcases, all with matching brown morocco edges and silk covered boards. Cases with a few small scuffs and spots of toning, near fine condition. Signed by the publisher on the preface of Volume I. One of 1499 copies of the "edition luxus," this being number 974. Complete with 105 lithographs printed in color on heavy paper, each protected by a captioned tissue guard. All lithographs created from the original gouache, watercolor, ink, and pastel paintings by Salvador Dalí, which he completed in 1963 and 1964. Text pages feature Dalí's signature watermark in the corner. (Field 69.3) (Lopsinger 1600) An incredible collectible, rarely seen on the market in its complete form. Spanish painter Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) had a complex relationship with religion throughout his life. He sites his upbringing in a devout Catholic family as a significant influence on his artistic style and world views, but did not carry traditional practices into adulthood. Religious themes are explored in a number of his paintings including "Christ of Saint John of the Cross," "The Crucifixion," and "The Madonna of Port Lligat," all created after his return to Spain in the postwar era. Longtime friends and art collectors Guiseppe and Mara Albaretto commissioned Dalí to create illustrations for a new edition of the Bible in the early 1960s in hopes that he would "meditate on the Catholic religion" and reconnect with his own faith. The resulting 105 images, vibrantly reproduced here, are matched with specific verses from the Latin Vulgate Bible, which was prepared by St. Jerome in the 4th century and used as the Authorized Version in the Roman Catholic Church. Overall a good set, with a notable chain of provenance. Sixth Rabbinic Bible (in Hebrew: Mikra'ot Gedolot), edited by Johann Buxtorf I (1565-1629), professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel, and the foremost Christian Hebraist of his era, with the assistance of the Jewish scholars, Abraham Braunschweig, who served as the principal corrector, and Mordechai Gumplin of Posen. This was "a truly audacious undertaking for his time" (Burnett, From Christian Hebraism to Jewish Studies), as no Christian scholar had yet attempted to edit the entire biblical corpus, including the Aramaic versions (Targumim) and masoretic notes. Based mainly on the third Rabbinic Bible published by Daniel Bomberg at Venice in 1546-1548, the editor has carefully incorporated elements from two other Venetian editions. At the verso of the Latin title Buxtorf provides a detailed bibliographical excursus on the earlier Venetian editions and offers a tribute to Bomberg's industry by reprinting the colophon of the second Venetian Rabbinic Bible (1524-1525) at the conclusion of the masoretic appendix, with text by the Hebrew grammarian and lexicographer, Elijah Levita (1468 or 1469-1549) and a new introduction by Abraham Braunschweig. The design of the sectional titles and separate book title vignettes closely model those of the Venetian editions. "Buxtorf did not plan simply to reprint one of the existing Venice editions, but rather to assemble the best features of them all into one work" and "to provide theologians with what he considered the most important tools for interpreting the Old Testament" (Burnett). Buxtorf served in an official capacity as Basel's Hebrew censor, charged with the oversight of all Jewish printing in the city, and insuring that "no 'blasphemies' or slurs against Christians or Christianity appear in any book printed in Basel" (Burnett). He carefully edited the Jewish commentaries in the Rabbinic Bible in accordance with this mandate, "and removed many words and phrases which had escaped the attention of earlier censors" (Burnett). The Rabbinic Bible contains the vocalized Masoretic text of the Hebrew Scriptures, with accents, and a vocalized Targum, an Aramaic paraphrase of the biblical text: Onkelos for the Pentateuch; Jonathan b. Uzziel for the Prophets; and Targum Hagiographa for the Writings. The Hebrew and Aramaic versions are printed in square characters and presented in facing columns at the center of each page. (The Jerusalem Targum of the Pentateuch appears as an appendix.) In addition to the Aramaic paraphrases, the Rabbinic Bible includes a massive scholarly apparatus of biblical commentaries by Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Baal ha-Turim (Jacob b. Asher), R. David Kimchi (Radak), R. Levi b. Gershon (Ralbag), Saadia Gaon, and R. Isaiah, along with the Masora, a corpus of critical notes on the external form of the Biblical text, compiled by Jewish scholars from late antiquity through the medieval era. As frequently occurs, a copy of Buxtorf's work on the textual history of the Hebrew Bible, Tiberias (the 1620 first edition), is bound-in. This work was made possible by the publication in 1538 of Elijah Levita's Masoret ha-Masoret, a commentary on the Masora, which Buxtorf translated into Latin for his own private use in 1593. "Buxtorf was concerned with the integrity of the consonantal text and the origin and integrity of the vowel points and accents of the Hebrew Bible from the very beginning of his scholarly career," and while he had earlier published a long excursus on the age of the vowel points and accents in his 1609 Thesaurus Grammaticus, "Tiberias is Buxtorf's fullest and most impressive work on the history of the biblical text" (Burnett). This esteemed Venetian press, Typographia Balleoniana, was well regarded for their printing of finely produced religious works.

A scarce example. The first volume is the Old Testament from Genesis to Chronicles. The second volume is the remainder of the Old Testament from Ezra to Maccabees. The New Testament is contained in the third volume which we lack. Published by order of the Catholic Church Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith or ?Sacrae Congregat. de Propaganda Fide?, this Arabic translation of the Bible was added for the use of the Eastern Churches in Rome, in the year 1671. The text is not vocalized (no diacritics or vowel points). Based on the 1650 edition, however modified, corrected, and enlarged, this edition is considered to be the first printed edition of the complete Bible in Arabic. Philip Guadagnolo and Louis or Luigi Maracci contributed as translators and editors. It "eventually won general acceptance among Arabic-speaking Christians". The above title is expressed both in Arabic and in Latin and is followed by a Preface to the Reader. This edition of the Arabic Bible was overseen by Maronite Archbishop of Damascus, Sergius Risius, by the order of Pope Urban VIII but it was not published until 1671; prelates of the Eastern churches, such as the Archbishop of Aleppo and the Patriarch of the Copts, requested the publishing of the Bible in the Arabic tongue, as manuscript copies had become rare and frequently incorrect. The Pope approved this and charged the Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith to execute the work; they appointed Sergius Risius to undertake the revision. All accessible Arabic versions were compared to each other and Hebrew and Latin editions; the present Arabic translation was composed based on such extensive review whereby Risius was assisted in this undertaking by Philip Guadagnoli. The version was prepared over a period of many years by Philip Guadagnolo and revised by Louis Maracci. First received with hesitation, it "eventually won general acceptance among Arabic-speaking Christians" (Darlow/M. 1652). Edited by Raphael Tuki, Bishop of Arsinoe, this present edition (usually issued in two volumes but here bound in one) contains the books of Genesis through Nehemiah and Tobit only. - Occasional worming to margins, otherwise a good, well-preserved copy. The preface (pp. 1-115) explains dozens of rhetorical figures such as metaphor and allegory, as well as the less familiar diezeugmenon, aposiopesis, prosopeia, etc.: for each Bluteau provides a definition and examples, sometimes quite lengthy. Then he moves on to an alphabetical list of terms that might be chosen as themes for a sermon, with a summary of the meaning of the term, the biblical passages in which it appears, and an outline of points to cover in a sermon focused on it.Bluteau died the year this volume of the Oraculum appeared. No further volumes were published, and aspiring preachers were left to choose from sermon topics beginning with the letters "A" or "B".
