Uit de schriften van Philippus Camerarius, Michiel de Montanje en andere schrijvers getrokken en vertaelt, door Maria Heyns.[NL] Maria Heyns was een Nederlandse schrijfster, vermoedelijk geboren rond 1615 in Kampen. Ze is vooral bekend om haar enige werk, 'Bloemhof der doorluchtige voorbeelden', gepubliceerd in 1647. Zij verbleef in 1647 in Schoonhoven en voltooide daar de opdracht aan Sibylle van Griethuysen. 'Bloemhof der doorluchtige voorbeelden' is een verzameling van historische anekdotes, essays en moralistische beschouwingen. Het werk bevat ook vertalingen van elf essays uit het derde boek van Michel de Montaigne's 'Essais', waarmee Heyns een van de eerste Nederlandse vertalers van Montaigne was. Daarnaast zijn er emblematische gravures opgenomen, afkomstig uit het werk van Zacharias Heyns, wat suggereert dat er mogelijk een familierelatie tussen hen bestond. Het boek werd gedrukt door Jacob Lescailje voor Jan van Hilten in Amsterdam. Het titelblad bevat een vignet en zes emblematische gravures van Jan Swelinck, overgenomen uit Zacharias Heyns' 'Emblemata' van 1625. Het boek is een mengeling van historische anekdotiek, essays, emblemata en recht toe recht aan moralisme, in proza dat soepel leest. waarschijnlijk geinspireerd op De Wetssteen der vernunften van Jan de Brune de Jonge uit 1644. Het laatste kwart van de Bloemhof bestaat voornamelijk uit de letterlijke vertalingen van veelal complete essays van Montaigne (Essais 1580-1588). Nooit eerder waren in één keer zoveel teksten van Montaigne in het Nederlands vertaald. Auteurs als Jacob Cats, Johan van Beverwijck en Johan de Brune hadden hier en daar Montaigne geciteerd, en al in de zestiende eeuw hadden Jan van Hout en H.L. Spiegel zelfs een en ander vertaald, maar deze vertaalexperimenten waren tot dan toe zonder serieus vervolg gebleven.Opvallend is dat Maria Heyns ook essays uit de derde en laatste bundel van Montaigne vertaalde, waar de toon van de virtuoze aartstwijfelaar nog persoonlijker en intiemer is dan in het vroegere werk. In de bundel van Heyns wordt Montaignes ik-vorm gewoon gehandhaafd. Hoe de lezer Heyns' eigen werk en de Montaigne-vertalingen nog kon scheiden is raadselachtig. Eerder in het werk is de auteur evenmin erg prominent aanwezig, maar dat het om een eigentijds persoon van Nederlandse herkomst gaat blijkt uit verwijzingen naar bijvoorbeeld H.L. Spiegel en Jacob Cats. Onder deze Nederlandse verwijzingen vallen die naar Zacharias Heyns het meest op; van hem zijn diverse emblemata, inclusief de picturae, opgenomen.Omdat het werk van Zacharias Heyns te midden van de Nederlandse ontleningen in de Bloemhof zo de boventoon voert, roept dit opnieuw de vraag op of Maria niet nauw verwant was aan de omstreeks 1638 overleden drukker/dichter. Heeft ze wellicht een en ander van hem geërfd, bijvoorbeeld de originele etsplaten van de emblemen die in 1647 haar Bloemhof gingen sieren?
