Deluxe Edition; one of 50 copies (out of 300 in total); specially bound by Chambolle-Duru in full blue morocco; gilt rules on covers; gilt-decorated spine; all edges gilt. The original wrappers and prospectus have been bound in, along with extra plates and three original wash drawings by Thevenot, as well as an unsigned aquatint or pochoir of a woman with a parasol. Bookplate; fine in the original binder's slipcase (a little worn). This piece was originally published in 1880, and remains one of the author's most famous short stories. It is set in the Franco-Prussian War, following a stagecoach of civilians fleeing Rouen. It has been made into at least 4 films, and is speculated to have loosely inspired the Ernest Haycox story 'Stage to Lordsburg,' which was made into the film Stagecoach. While that's possible, one might just as well claim that both stories owe something to The Canterbury Tales. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
