Madame de Stael avait tout juste trente ans lorsqu'elle publia cet important ouvrage, le premier de ceux qui allaient fonder sa réputation littéraire. Aussi bien elle avait déjà conçu un "art d'écrire" qui lui imposa pour ainsi dire, le "souci du style" dont la première manifestation se retrouve dans ce livre. En effet, à peine l'ouvrage venait-il d'être publié qu'elle décidait d'y apporter quelques indispensables modifications d'élocution, lesquelles entraînèrent, pour l'éditeur, la constitution de six 'cartons'.
