Tête de dos légèrement fendillée, quelques épidermures sur le dos, mors internes fendillés, rousseurs sur certaines pages. Cet ouvrage parut à une période où de nombreux travaux tentaient de dresser une signalétique des passions qui permettrait de renouveler les recherches de Charles Le Brun. Il connut d'ailleurs un certain succès dont témoignent les rééditions successives en 1845, 1853 et 1870. Depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, en effet, les artistes, les anatomistes et les physiologistes s'étaient relayés pour tenter de donner une nouvelle base à la codification de l'expression des émotions, mais aucun d'entre eux n'était parvenu à fonder ses démonstrations sur des images convaincantes. Jean-Baptiste Delestre (1800 - 1871) rapporte qu'afin de mieux comprendre le mouvement et le dynamisme des signes expressifs, il n'a pas hésité à les observer sur le vif dans les situations les plus extrêmes.
