L'ouvrage connut beaucoup de succès et fut réédité cinq fois avec à chaque réédition quelques modifications de l'auteur. Si le terme "Trou noir" ne fut créé qu'en 1967, le principe en fut cependant déjà imaginé par Laplace dans son Système du monde : " Un astre lumineux de même densité que la terre, et dont le diamètre seroit deux cent cinquante fois plus grand que celui du soleil, ne laisseroit en vertu de son attraction, parvenir aucun de ses rayons jusqu'à nous ; il est donc possible que les plus grands corps lumineux de l'univers, soient par cela même, invisibles. If the term "black hole" was not created until 1967, the principle was however already imagined by Laplace in his System of the world: "A luminous star of the same density as the earth, and whose diameter would be two hundred and fifty times larger than that of the sun, would not allow any of its rays to reach us by virtue of its attraction; it is therefore possible that the largest luminous bodies in the universe are thereby invisible. Pupilo de D'Alembert, Condorcet, Lagrange y Lavoisier, con esta obra Laplace consiguió explicar el Sistema del mundo newtoniano (el sistema solar) sin acudir a intervención divina, llevando la matematización de la mecánica celeste al extremo de poder explicar el sistema como sistema. Y su éxito procedió de su carácter divulgativo (aunque arduo) por conseguir hacerlo sin presentar las formulaciones matemáticas que lo justificaban. Cualquier interesado debería no dejar de leer el espléndido estudio introductorio que Javier Ordóñez y Ana Rioja dispusieron a la edición castellana de la Exposition que la editorial Crítica publicó en 2005.
