Illustrated paper-covered boards, bumped to corners, tanned to edges, with a few blemishes and shallow scratches on the back. Green cloth spine, a little creased. Binding strong. Illustrated endpapers, a little tanned to edges. Full colour title page. 72pp. of colour illustrations. Contents clean and bright. Félix Lorioux (1872 1964) was a French illustrator. Born in Angers, he began to study art as an apprentice (with painters on glass), then in Angers and Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts. He was employed by Citroën (French car manufacturer) as a drafter for a few years, then as an illustrator for Hachette (Fables de La Fontaine, Contes de Perrault. A friend of Walt Disney, who admired his work, he was then hired to illustrate Mickey stories for the French market, as well as The Silly Symphony. But Lorioux' style, full of humour and fancy, widely inspired by Art nouveau and Japanese painting, was too far from Disney world, and the contract was broken in 1934. A quiet man, with no interest in self-promotion, Lorioux took on a career as a book illustrator, and became one of France s best loved artists. Brilliant full page lithographs throughout. Shows rubbing to edges and lower corners; yet remans a very nice copy. ; 72 pages; Signed by Illustrator.

Large folio. 10 x 13 inches. iv [Half-title and illustrated title] + 72 pp., each a full-page, brightly coloured illustration of the anthropomorphised birds, animals and insects in the fables, with the French text in verse form. Fables are: La Cigale et la Fourmi [The Grasshopper and the Ant]. Le Corbeau et le Renard [The Crow and the Fox]. Le Rat de Ville et le Rat des Champs [The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse ]. Le Loup et L'Agneau [The Wolf and the Lamb]. Le Renard et la Cigogne [The Fox and the Crane]. Le Heron [The Heron]. Each fable occupies 12 pages. Bound in original coloured, pictorial paper covered boards with green cloth spine. Endpapers decorated in red and black. Some slight wear to extremities and one closed, repaired tear to lower edge of one leaf, not affecting illustration. A very good example of an attractive children's book. De la Fontaine collected his fables from classical sources and published them between 1668 and 1694. In this 20th century interpretation they are all fables from Aesop, and aimed directly at children - the image on the upper board being that of a bewigged 17th century gentleman (De La Fontaine perhaps?), quill in hand and comfortably seated in a chair, reading (or possibly writing?) the fables for a boy and a girl. Lorioux's illustrations are astonishingly original in their interpretation of these old favourites and are considered as some of his finest work.
