His works are characterised by deep psychological analysis, a certain sense of paradox and absurd, anti-nationalist flavor. In 1937 he published his first novel, Ferdydurke, which presented many of his usual themes: problems of immaturity and youth, creation of identity in interactions with others, and an ironic, critical examination of class roles in Polish society and culture. He gained fame only during the last years of his life, but is now considered one of the foremost figures of Polish literature. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966. En mi sentir (y creo que para las quince o veinte personas que ayudaron a su traducción) la lectura de una página más me confirmaba que Ferdydurke estaba a la par de las cumbres de la literatura contemporánea. El hecho de sacrificar largos meses en la difícil, casi ímproba versión de Ferdydurke, quitará, supongo, a mis palabras todo sabor de barato elogio. Por otra parte, como ningún libro teme más, odia más y presta más valor al juicio humano que éste, conviene hablar con sinceridad. Ferdydurke es un libro de choque, de combate. Estas humorísticas aventuras de un hombre infantilizado constituyen un escándalo literario, pero escándalo de la más alta seriedad. Atacando ¡y con qué audacia! ciertas básicas falsificaciones del mundo actual que hasta ahora se nos escapaban, Ferdydurke nos procura una especie de alivio psíquico, o dicho de otro modo, representa una descarga. Artísticamente, es obra de una riqueza enorme. El lector mismo se dará cuenta de la calidad de esta poesía violenta y baja, del brillo y la profundidad de este teatro grotesco y locamente humorístico, de la amplitud y fuerza del estilo, y sobre todo, de tantos y tantos descubrimientos artísticos y psicológicos diseminados en sus páginas. Se puede estar o no de acuerdo con las sorprendentes tesis de Gombrowicz, pero no cabe duda de que Ferdydurke apunta y acierta a uno de los más drásticos y sensibles nervios de nuestra cultura. Y es una revisión especialmente valiosa para Hispanoamérica -clásico continente de la inmadurez. Resulta difícil prever la suerte de este mensaje entre nosotros, sobre todo cuando no nos llega de París. Creo, sin embargo, que con estas breves líneas no hago otra cosa sino disparar el primer tiro en la batalla que tarde o temprano van a librar los ferdydurkistas de Hispanoamérica. It was translated into Spanish by Gombrowicz himself in 1947, when he was living in self-imposed exile in Argentina. During a brief thaw, it was reissued in Poland in 1951, where it enjoyed some success, causing the Communists to ban it for its subversive nature. It was translated into French in 1959, then into English in 1961 Eric Mosbacher. An important book in the canon of the post-modern novel, much in the vein of works by Flann O'Brien. Gombrowicz's first novel, originally published in Polish in 1937. Long considered a masterpiece of social criticism as well as a vanguard work of literary experimentation, the book's notoriety gained Gombrowicz instant acclaim in literary circles, but made him enemies in his home country, from which he remained voluntarily exiled for the last thirty years of his life. Mosbacher's translation was made indirectly, using earlier translations into French, Spanish and Italian; this remained the standard English translation until Danuta Borchardt's 2000 transation directly from the Polish.
