Ajouter au panierHardcover. First edition, first printing. This is a jacketed first edition, first printing set of one of the most celebrated works of science fiction. The set is inscribed in the second volume, Foundation and Empire, on the front free endpaper recto in two lines of blue ink: "With best wishes | Isaac Asimov". The bindings and unclipped dust jackets are all first state of the first edition, conforming, without exception, to Currey's issue points, these variously including color of binding, size of publisher's imprint, text block width, number of titles on jacket rear face, typo on jacket flap, and dust jacket print colors.Condition of the volumes is very good plus or better in very good or better dust jackets. The volumes each, of course, state "First Edition" on their copyright pages. The bindings each remain square and tight. We note light wear to corners and spine ends, with bruising to all four corners of Foundation and the lower corners of Second Foundation, which also shows shelf wear to the bottom edges and a quite faint diagonal line of minor blemishes perhaps droplets of moisture, spanning the upper center to lower right. The binding of the inscribed volume, Foundation and Empire, remains sharp-cornered with light shelf wear to the bottom edges and a hint of soiling to the rear cover fore edge. The contents of all three volumes are quite respectably clean. Light spotting appears confined to the top edges and the Foundation pastedowns. The sole previous ownership mark, apart from the author's inscription, is the character "I" inked to the upper front pastedown of Foundation. The unrestored, original, substantially complete dust jackets each retain their original "2.75" front flap price and are notably bright, with no discernible color shift between the illustrated jacket spines and front faces. Each jacket shows light wear to hinges and extremities, with modest soiling to the white rear faces. Loss is de minimis, confined to fractional chipping at the spine ends and flap fold corners, and a tiny triangular chip to the upper rear face of Second Foundation. The upper front flap price on Foundation had been x'd in pencil with a British price written adjacent; these markings are now gently and substantially erased. The dust jackets are protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. Together, these three volumes are a landmark of the genre's twentieth century "Golden Age" by one of the genre's most celebrated authors. Russian-born Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) was working at the Naval Air Experimental Station in Philadelphia and working toward his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Columbia College when, between 1942 and 1945, he "wrote several stories that were to form the highly popular Foundation series. Inspired by Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, the three books, Foundation (1951), Foundation and Empire (1952), and Second Foundation (1953), told the story of the decline and fall of the Galactic Empire, the Dark Ages that followed, and the rise of the Second Galactic Empire, all of which were predicted by the invented science of "psychohistory," the ability to predict the mass currents of future events." "In 1950 Asimov published his first novel, Pebble in the Sky, the first of sixteen he would publish in that decade. He also wrote many textbooks and general science books during that time, on biochemistry, the atom, and biology." (ANB) But it was Asimov's Foundation series that was honored in 1966 with a special Hugo Award for "Best All-Time Series." Asimov went on to populate the universe created by his Foundation Trilogy with many other books, including both prequels and sequels. The original work endures in both influence and popularity.Bibliographic reference: L.W. Fine dust jacket with nothing major to report. Also, an original typed letter signed by Isaac Asimov. One page, 4to, New York, 15th January 1949, to Erle Korshak of Shasta Publishers. One of the earliest Asimov letters we have seen with great content revealing the business nature and wit of the author. Asimov acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter, which he has read carefully, and remarks 'The notion of an annual anthology of the best of science fiction is a good one, and the continuing and growing market for hard-cover science-fiction is something that cannot help but be pleasant for an author', further adding 'Three of my stories have already been anthologized, and $25 establishes a record low as far as money returns are concerned rather easily, I might add so that I cannot help but hope that the larger publishing houses go on to express even more than mere interest' and also discussing the structure of fees in the release form that Korshak had sent him, 'I notice that if Shasta publishes the story, then I get $25 for each reprint i.e. 10 reprints, $250. If, however, someone other than Shasta, (say Simon & Schuster or Macmillan) publishes the story, then I get $25 altogether, i.e. 10 reprints, $25. This seems to follow the principle of "Them ez hez most money; pays least". Is that constitutional? Furthermore, the second paragraph says that an outside publisher will pay as much as Shasta can squeeze out of them, but in no case less than $25. The third paragraph, however, seems to commit me to accept $25 flat with no qualifying statement that it might conceivably be more. Being the world's poorest contract lawyer, these are probably silly points I am trying to make, but I would enjoy enlightenment'. Annotated in initialled by Korshak to the upper left corner, indicating that he replied to Asimov on 17th January 1949. Beautiful. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).
