Ajouter au panierHardcover. First Edition. Harold and Maude is Higgins' first book and is based on the 1971 dark comedy, cult-classic film of the same name which he also wrote. The story follows 19-year old Harold, who, obsessed with death, often stages fake suicides to get attention from his disinterested mother. Harold drives a hearse and frequently attends funerals of people he doesn't know. While attending a funeral, Harold meets Maude, an eccentric, free-spirited 79-year old, and despite their age difference, form an unlikely friendship and eventual romantic relationship. Maude's zest for life contrasts sharply with Harold's morbid obsession and she teaches Harold about life, love and living in the moment. 8vo, in original off-white cloth boards with red-lettered spine and red embossed flowers on front board. 145 pp. Front free endpaper shows signs of removal of an inscription and bookplate. Binding is tight and pages are unmarked. Nice and bright original psychedelic dust jacket has two small, closed tears at the bottom of the front panel and a small dog ear on the back flap. Near Fine in a Very Good+ dust jacket preserved in a clear sleeve. .

Ajouter au panierFirst UK edition. Hardcover. Fine in fine dustjacket with a touch of foxing on the flaps (sterling price intact). The author's first (and only) novel, about a repressed young man, fixated on death and funerals, who has an affair with an 80-year-old woman. A black comedy, filmed in 1971, directed by Hal Ashby and starring Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon. It had a slow-burning success, with a slow start but becoming a surprise minor cult classic. Higgins was born in Noumea, New Caledonia, of an American military father and an Australian mother. His education and early life was mostly spent in Sydney. He had a short, but successful Hollywood career, being involved as writer or director in, among others, "Harold and Maude", "Foul Play" , "Silver Streak", "9 to 5" and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", all hits in the late 1970s/80s. The author died in his forties during the AIDS epidemic on the late eighties. The UK edition of this title is particularly scarce, when compared to its US Lippincott counterpart. Scan available on request.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition of the classic 1971 American coming-of-age dark comedyâ"drama film directed by Hal Ashby and released by Paramount Pictures. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by both Colin Higgins [on the front free endpaper] and singer-songwriter Cat Stevens [on the front pastedown]. The music inÂHarold and MaudeÂwas composed and performed byÂCat Stevens. He had been suggested by Elton John to do the music after John had dropped out of the project. Stevens composed two original songs for the film, "Don't Be Shy" and "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" and performed instrumental and alternative versions of the previously released songs "On the Road to Find Out", "I Wish, I Wish", "Miles from Nowhere", "Tea for the Tillerman", "I Think I See the Light", "Where Do the Children Play?" and "Trouble" (all from his albumsÂMona Bone JakonÂorÂTea for the Tillerman). "Don't Be Shy" and "If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out" remained unreleased on any album until the 1984 compilationÂFootsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Don Bender. Rare and desirable signed by both Higgins and Stevens. The basis for the 1971 dark comedy drama of the same name, Harold and Maude follows the story of Harold, a neurotic teenager who enjoys funerals and visits to the cemetery, and Maude, an eighty-two year old lady still in love with life. Critically and commercially unsuccessful when originally released, the film developed a cult following and in 1983 began making a profit. The film is ranked number 45 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Funniest Movies of all Time and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1997, for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant".

Ajouter au panierFirst printing. Doubly-inscribed first edition of the dark romantic comedy, later expanded into a cult-classic screenplay. Neither a straight inspiration for Hal Ashby's famous film adaptation nor a novelization, this novel was written in parallel with the screenplay, both of which grew out of Higgins original MFA thesis, and was published shortly after the film's release. HAROLD AND MAUDE tells the story of a romance between a morose and morbid young man and an elderly free spirit with great zest for life but little attachment to it, memorably played by Ruth Gordon on screen. Though contemporary critics took some offense to the film's style and the story's messages, it attracted (and kept) a fierce cult following, and is regularly cited as a classic. This copy is unusual for its double inscription, signed by Higgins twice to the same recipients at different dates. A great copy. 8'' x 5.5''. Original off-white cloth with decorative red stamping and spine lettering. Original Burgundy endpapers. Original unclipped white dust jacket with psychedelic lettering designed by Don Bender, photographic portrait of Higgins on rear panel by Henry Diltz. 145, [1] pages. Inscribed in black pen to front free endpaper: "For Jinette & Paul Emile / With all best wishes and much love, Colin / Mar 1973," followed by: "To Jinette and Paul Emile / Who will always be / My first family in France, with all my love, Colin / Jan 1974". Light wear and faint traces of shelfsoil to jacket, tiny tape repair to jacket verso, else near fine. Mild shelfwear to spine tips. Near fine in very good plus jacket.
