Collector`s copy! "Originally published in 1959, Jazz has become one of the most collectible photography books from the mid-twentieth century. Like William Claxton's Jazzlife and Dennis Stock's Jazz Street, Van Der Elsken's entry in the niche of jazz photography was published just prior to the moment when rock'n'roll cemented its place as the popular music of choice for young people. This book is perhaps the most successful of numerous attempts to capture photographically the essence of jazz because it is more than just a succession of musicians' portraits, or even a documentary record of performance, but a book that visually echoes the music itself. Other photographers, perhaps closer to the jazz community, have made books on the subject, but Van Der Elsken's is the work of an authentic jazz fan and a maker of authentic photobooks." (from the publisher) Ed van der Elsken (19251990), the "enfant terrible" of Dutch photography, was a talented photographer and filmmaker who expressed his meetings with people in photos, photo books and films for more than 40 years. Strolling through cities such as Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Amsterdam or travelling through Africa and Japan, he preferably took photographs of striking individuals with character. His first photo book Love on the Left Bank was published in 1956, which instantly made him world-famous. Some 20 photobooks followed. He also made several television films, mostly about subjects regarding his own life.***************Steidl, 2007. Martin Parr, The Photobook vol 1, Seite 246. A clean, fine copy, with a signature to half-title 'Joost Divend'. Ed van der Elsken was a prolific Dutch artist, photographer, and filmmaker, whose influence can be felt in the work of celebrated photographers of the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries, including that of Wolfgang Tillmans and Larry Clark. This collection of black and white photographs features legends such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzie Gillespie and Duke Ellington, all mid-performance, and often in extreme close-up. It is an extraordinary record of Jazz history, by an extraordinary photographer. The accompanying text, which is in Dutch, is by J. Bernlef.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition, first printing, Dutch text. "The 1950s constituted a golden age for jazz music. The decade was also renowned for classic small-camera photography, much of it as rough and ready as the best experimental jazz. The two art forms combine to perfection in Ed van der Elsken's gem of a book, Jazz. The result is not just a succession of musician's portraits, or even a documentary record of performance, but a book that visually echoes the music itself. Other photographers, perhaps closer to the jazz community, have made books on the subject, but Van der Elsken's is the work of an authentic jazz fan and maker of authentic photobooks" (Parr & Badger). Superb copy of this influential work. Parr & Badger, I, p.246; Roth p.156. Small square octavo. Over 100 illustrations from Elsken's photographs. Original photographic glossy laminated boards, black endpapers. With the glassine jacket. A spectacularly well-preserved copy, slightly shrinkage of the glassine which is faintly browned and mildly crumpled at the corners, but the boards retain an almost freakishly high gloss, near fine.
