Repairs to the head and tail of the spine. 16 fold-out maps and illustratons, and many regular illustrations. An account of travels around Scandinavia in 1736 and 1737.Wear to spine and cracking to joints. Endpapers and page edges yellowed with very occasional spotting, but generally clean internally. Occasional small tears to maps, but more are completely intact. 12mo.

4to. Pp. (viii), 238, (2). With 16 engraved plates and maps and some woodcut vignettes. (The list of plates calls for 18 plates but 2 were never issued). Partly with some minor staining. Contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands, richly gilt and with title label, corners worn, hinges weak and partly cracked, spine ends nicely restored. Stamp (Museum d'Hist. Na.) on title. First edition of this wellknown account of the French scientific expedition headed by Maupertius to the north of Sweden in 1736-37. Reginaud Outhier (1694-1774), French priest, participated as the astronomer on the expedition. His account comprises a personal journal with descriptive details of the area and its inhabitants. First edition of Outhier's account of the scientific voyage to Lapland lead by Maupertouis."In 1736-1737 the Academy sponsored an expedition to Lapland to measure the length of a degree of latitude near the North Pole, in order to determine the actual figure of the earth" and Outhier, "dont la capacité dans l?Ouvrage que nous allions faire, etoit connuë" (Maupertuis, La Figure de la terre, P. xv), was invited to participate. He assisted in the astronomical observations, drew eighteen maps of the lands through which they passed, and studied the religious and social customs of the Lapps. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt but rubbed and a little chipped, as are the edges and fore-corners. Joints beginning to split. Some, generally light, foxing throughout, not, however, affecting the plates or maps.
