Partly with some minor staining. Contemporary full calf, spine with five raised bands, richly gilt and with title label, corners worn, hinges weak and partly cracked, spine ends nicely restored. Stamp (Museum d'Hist. Na.) on title. First edition of this wellknown account of the French scientific expedition headed by Maupertius to the north of Sweden in 1736-37. Reginaud Outhier (1694-1774), French priest, participated as the astronomer on the expedition. His account comprises a personal journal with descriptive details of the area and its inhabitants. The maps and plates are done after drawings by the author. Bring no. 142.

He assisted in the astronomical observations, drew eighteen maps of the lands through which they passed, and studied the religious and social customs of the Lapps.
