Two pages of adverts to the rear.'L'Assommoir' and 'Nana' are the seventh and ninth published novels in Emile Zola's 'Les Rougon-Macquart' cycle, a collection of twenty novels following the lives of the members of the two titular branches of a family during the Second French Empire. Though the cycle has recurring characters and familial connections, the novels are not strictly a series. These two novels, for example, share the character of Nana; she appears towards the end of 'L'Assommoir' as the daughter of an abusive drunk. That novel ends with her living on the streets and beginning a life of prostitution. 'Nana' sees her rise to become a high-class courtesan.This edition of 'L'Assommoir', published by Henry Vizetelly, had some slight modifications to the text, so as to not offend the British audience. However, Zola's work was so salacious, that Vizetelly was vilified in parliament, and prosecuted for obscenity.Emile Zola was an influential writer, who is known for leading the literary school of naturalism. His novels show the prosperity and poverty in France during the nineteenth century. In the original cloth bindings. Externally, smart.
