Surnommé « le Virgile au rabot », il est aujourd'hui considéré comme l'un des premiers poètes ouvriers. Adam Billaut, l'un des premiers poètes ouvriers de France, fut surnommé le 'Virgile au rabot'. Corneille lui a dédié un sonnet et Voltaire le compta parmi les écrivains du Grand Siècle.
