Humble menuisier de Nevers, Adam Billaut (1602-1662) rencontre un succès inattendu grâce à l'enthousiasme des plus fameux poètes de son temps, qui voient en lui un prodige littéraire issu de la classe laborieuse. Surnommé « le Virgile au rabot », il est aujourd'hui considéré comme l'un des premiers poètes ouvriers. Petit manque de cuir à la coiffe supérieure, mors fendillés et quelques cahiers brunis (comme souvent).

Reliure demi-cuir défraîchie [manque de cuir sur le dos, mors fendus où seules les coutures retiennent les plats, inscription manuscrite à l'encre dans la marge inférieure de la page de titre ('De Savignac [.] 1730'), rares taches ou rousseurs]. Exemplaire qui mériterait une nouvelle reliure. Format 8,2 x 14,3 cm. Une seconde édition identique mais sans les 4 pages du Privilège et tirée en plus petits caractères est parue la même année (Brunet I-46). Adam Billaut, l'un des premiers poètes ouvriers de France, fut surnommé le 'Virgile au rabot'. Corneille lui a dédié un sonnet et Voltaire le compta parmi les écrivains du Grand Siècle. (Cioranescu 12196). Inclus dans ce recueil les vers de Billaut [p.415-418] inspirés par 'Le Pet Fatal' de Jean Bardou [connu aussi sous le titre 'Le Pet Eventé' ou encore 'La Défense du Pet' mais attribué à Saint Evremond ou de Sandricourt (cf les avis divergents de 'Bibliotheca Scatologica' (n°74 & n°117) et Lachèvre 'Bibliographie des recueils collectifs de poésie publiés de 1597 à 1700' (T.II page 135) pour la paternité de cette pièce)]: 'Les beaux vers qu'a faits M. Bardou sur la quintessence d'un pet obligèrent Maître Adam de faire ceux qui suivent à la gloire de ce pétillant auteur' ( cette poésie est citée par Lachèvre mais curieusement absente de Bibliotheca Scatologica ).
