Mobilisé au 106, RI - le régiment de Maurice Genevoix - le jeune peintre Eugène-Emmanuel Lemercier arrive aux Éparges en septembre 1914. Il est au front dans ce secteur jusqu'au début du mois d'avril 1915, époque à laquelle il disparaît dans un combat. Dans les lettres qu'il écrit pendant sa campagne, Lemercier exprime ce qu'il ressent et ce qu'il ressent est " la révélation la plus complète de ce qu'il y a de plus intime dans une âme de combattant. ", la révélation de la tragédie de l'esprit confronté à la guerre qui l'écrase. " Aucune correspondance de soldat tué. n'approche en grandeur, en pathétique, en vérité, de celle de Lemercier (Norton Cru) ". Au fond, quelques maisons se voilent d'une brume légère et conservent les noirs délicats que notre cher paysagiste sentait si bien. Telle est la paix de cette matinée.
