Il Liber monstrorum de diversis generibus è un catalogo ragionato di ciò che vi è in natura di portentoso, mosso dalla volontà critica di chiarire quanto le definizioni sui mostri siano vere o confutabili. Scritto probabilmente a metà dell'VIII secolo d. C. in ambiente anglosassone, potenzialmente vicino alla temperie culturale di Aldelmo di Malmesbury (abate che morì nel 709), è tramandato da sei manoscritti (segno di grande successo; IX-X secolo) in minuscola carolina. Il libro è diviso in tre parti, proprio come la Chimera di cui parla: quasi umani (dalle razze ai casi singoli), animali e serpenti. Il Liber è il lettino psicalalitico dell'età intorno a Carlo Magno, che lo diede alla luce, e della nostra, che ne riscatta col piacere del testo, l'oltranza e l'allegoricità. Nella traduzione di Corrado Bologna, che accompagna il testo insieme al saggio introduttivo, un arabesco sulla "mostruosità" nei secoli, questo libro diviene un colorito diorama, che forse non dispiacerebbe a Borges, un Baedeker dell'Altro Mondo, che scopriamo nascosto nello zoo di vetro delle piccole mostruose cose di pessimo gusto che ci circondano. Fin dalle origini, forse, la terra fu popolata e impregnata di Mostri. Ne traboccano i poemi della "culla del mondo"; Gilgamesh combatté mostri, e la Bibbia ne consegna in quantità all'Occidente moderno, con tutto il loro fardello di allegoria e di minaccia apocalittica. d'Oriente ne nascondono altre tracce, impigliate ti impenetrabili degli ideogrammi. Ma è sopra tutto il mondo greco-romano, quello che inizia con i poemi omerici, e prima ancora, per spegnersi con una serie di dissonanze dense di echi nel melting pot del Cristianesimo, a partorire tanti mostri, fra cielo e terra.
