First edition of Sartre's first book, published as volume 10 of the Nouvelle Encyclopedie Philosophique and commissioned by the editor, Henri Delacroix. Octavo, original wrappers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "A Brice Parain en tout amitie! JP Sartre." The recipient, Brice Parain was a fellow French philosopher and friend of Sartre's, mainly interested in Communism, Surrealism, and Existentialism, the failures of which he anticipated in part in some of his earlier works, such as Essai sur la misà re humaine (1934) and Retour à la France (1936). Parain was one of the chief collaborators in the beginnings of Ãditions Gallimard (since 1927), as well as a close friend of the Gallimard brothers, particularly Gaston. He was the principal director of the Encyclopà die de la Plà iade collection, and translated various Russian classic works published through Gallimard, including works by Lev Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, and Aleksandr Pushkin. Near fine in the original glassine which is in near fine condition with a small annotation "Envoi" to the crown of the spine. First editions are rare, presentation copies exceedingly so. Understanding the imagination was central to Sartreâs attempts to understand what it was to be human, and how one should live. In L'Imagination, Sartre discusses what the existence of imagination shows about the nature of human consciousness and argues that while some believe imagining to be like an internal perception, it is in fact, nothing like it. Ultimately, Sartre argues that because we can imagine, we are ontologically free. A consciousness that could not imagine, he points out, would be hopelessly mired in the "real", incapable of the perception of unrealized possibilities, and thus any real freedom of thought or choice. In order to imagine, a consciousness must be able to posit an object as irrealâ"nonexistent, absent, somewhere else and it does so always from a particular point of view.

(Douglas 305; Contat 36/8a)Sartre's first book published as volume 10 of the "Nouvelle Encyclopedie Philosophique" which was commissioned by the editor, Henri Delacroix. In it, Sartre summarizes numerous outdated theories about imagination and proposes a phenomenological perspective. Sartre was at this time much impressed with the work of Husserl whom he claimed had made a major contribution towards the psychology of the imagination. This is only the first part of a much larger work. The publisher rejected the second half which was not published until 1940 in a revised form under the title L'Imaginaire. Original wraps with black and green front cover. Some wear to spine and the front cover is detached. Three lines of k notes to the bottom of pages 2 & 3. Top edge gilt. Gilt super-ex libris to inside of front board, the bottom of which is signed in gilt: "J-P Miguet". Housed in a green paper slip-case with green morocco edges. Near mint copy. Published when Sartre was 30 years old, "L'Imagination" constitutes his first full philosophical work and the first presentation of his basic arguments concerning phenomenology, consciousness and intentionality, which he later developed in full, and which came to have a profound influence on 20th century philosophy.Sartre, who on the title-page is described as "professeur au lycée du Havre", was requested to write the present work by Professor H. Delacroix, who was the supervisor on his dissertation. Before establishing his central arguments about "Imagination", Sartre famously criticizes earlier theories of imagination, in particular those of Descartes, Leibnitz, and Hume. He goes on to discussing psychological theories of imagination, including Bergson - the critique of whom offended for instance Meeau-Ponty, who otherwise praised Sartre's book. Finally, Sartre provides a highly important interpretation of Husserl's theory of imagination, which foreshadows the phenomenological way of understanding imagination that was to dominate the decades to come.
