Striking collection of twelve bound issues of "Le Moniteur des Dames et des Demoiselles" for the period 1867-1868. "Le Moniteur des Dames et des Demoiselles" was one of the most popular fashion magazines published for French women during the second half of the 19th century. This collection presents a striking array of womenâs fashions from the 1867-1868 season. Each of the twelve issues contains a hand-colored plate on which appear two or three ladies, often accompanied by an elegantly clad child, all dressed in magnificent costumes appropriate for various seasons and specific occasions: a day in the country, a casual promenade, visiting and receiving guests, weddings, evening receptions, balls, and other social events. The striking plates are after drawings by Jules David. Unfortunately, the May 1868 issue is lacking its plate. All other plates are present. Binding rubbed along edges with abrasion to leather. Closed tear at tail of spine. Minor and sporadic age-toning, foxing and creasing throughout. Text in French. Binding in overall fair, interior in good to good+ condition.

Ajouter au panierDAVID, Jean-Baptiste (illustrateur). . Le Moniteur des Dames et Demoiselles. [111 Fashion Color-Plates] Paris: [n.d.c.a. 1840]. A collection of 111 beautifully hand-colored engraved women's fashion plates from designs by Jean-Baptiste David. Oblong quarto (7 1/4 x 11 inches; 185 x 277 mm). Designers, engravers and Lithographers include Jean-Baptiste David, J. Bonnard, Jean de Beaumais, Geevais, Fuller and Company of London, A Boudin, Laure Noel, A. Sortien, etc. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Boards with some rubbing. Spine with a large chip from the center and head, tail and joints rubbed. Some occasional minimal foxing but generally the plates are very clean and bright. Some of the plates are trimmed close, occasionally touching the edges of the engravings. Still a very good collection of these lovely plates. "Jean-Baptiste David was a French painter and lithographer. His illustrations appeared in many books and magazines. He was particularly known for his illustrations of contemporary Parisian fashions. Jean-Baptiste David [aka Jules David] was born in 1808. He was a pupil of Pierre Duval Le Camus, who painted moralistic subjects. Duval was in turn a pupil of the famous painter Jacques-Louis David. Jean-Baptiste David began work in 1824, using his power of observation and facility of drawing to produce a variety of landscapes and interiors in Gothic style for publishers. Achille Devéria introduced David to the Journal des demoiselles and the Journal des jeunes personnes, for which he produced lithographs from 1839 to 1842. David's albums were often published as a supplement to women's magazines. He drew all the plates for the Le Moniteur de la Mode for fifty years. About 2,600 of David's fashion plates were first published in the Moniteur de la Mode, and then republished in other magazines in France, Germany, Britain, Spain and America. He was a pioneer in introducing contemporary backgrounds in his plates. In 1860 Samuel Orchart Beeton, husband of Mrs Beeton and publisher of the Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, began to include hand-colored fashion plates by David. These let his readers see the latest styles and colors from Paris, the world fashion center at the time. Beeton included paper patterns, which let owners of the newly introduced domestic sewing machines make their own dresses." (Artvee dot com). HBS 69334. $2,000.
