An important early translation into English, by the Royal Artillery captain and linguist F. E. Johnson (1861-1945), of the "Mu'allaqat" ("The Suspended Odes"), with extensive notes and explanations. Considered one of the primary sources for early written Arabic poetry, these poems are believed to have been hung in the Kaaba at Mecca (though some scholars have also suggested that the titular "suspension" is figurative, indicating that the poems "hang" in the reader's mind). In 1911 he joined the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and was appointed as the Chair of Oriental Studies. His predecessor was Georg Hoffmann (orientalist) (1845-1933). 1922-23 he became rector of the CAU. His publications include comprehensive works on the history of the shadow theatre .
