Salaman (1814-1901) was a Jewish British composer and pianist, acquainted with many of the leading composers of the day.

In the famous works dedicated to the Russian Prince Rasumowsky, Beethoven also arranged Russian folk songs. The prince was Russian envoy at the imperial court in Vienna until 1806 and had been one of Beethoven's "patrons" since 1786. The three pieces, written between 1804-06, occupy an important place in Beethoven's middle oeuvre, since they were written in the sign of the "new path" that was hinted at in 1802. The quartets were misunderstood by contemporaries and perplexingly referred to as "crazy music," while Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms (in his op. 51), or Arnold Schoenberg chose them as groundbreaking patterns or as significant mediators of expression. In den berühmten, dem russischen Fürsten Rasumowsky gewidmeten Werken verarbeitete Beethoven auch russische Volkslieder. Der Fürst war bis 1806 russischer Gesandter am Kaiserlichen Hofe in Wien und gehörte seit 1786 zu Beethovens "Gönners". Die drei zwischen 1804-06 entstandenen Stücke nehmen im mittleren Oeuvre Beethovens eine wichtigen Platz ein, da sie im Zeichen des 1802 angedeuteten "neuen Weges" entstanden sind. Die Quartette wurden von Zeitgenossen missverstanden und ratlos als "verrückte Musik" bezeichnet, während Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms (in seinem op. 51) oder Arnold Schönberg diese zu wegweisenden Mustern erwählten oder zu bedeutsamen Ausdrucksvermittlern machten.
