First French edition, the scarce Grand edition de lux limited first edition with gorgeous cream vellum binding, gold lettering and pictorial cover design, high quality paper, silk yellow ties, top edge gilt and dozens of tipped-in color plates by Arthur Rackham. This is #74 out of only 270, with only 20 being signed by Rackham. Illustrated chapter head pieces. Map of Kensington Gardens printed on the FFEP. Folio, 12" x 9." Remarkably has both of its original yellow silk ties, one still attached (have never seen both ties still kept, let alone one still attached *RARE* Fantastic! OVERALL CONDITION: NEAR MINT/NEAR FINE with 48/50 plates. First French edition published a year after the first English edition illustrated by Rackham at Hodder & Stoughton. Limited edition of 270 for this luxury edition in special binding. The white or vellum paper cartons were reserved only for luxury prints of works illustrated by Arthur Rackham. The color plate printing process was developed specifically to reproduce the delicacy of the watercolors of Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of 250 copies. The other 20 being printed on Japanese paper and signed by Rackham. This edition is very sought after and rare in such condition. The more common first French trade edition, published the same year, was bound with cloth and contained only 24 plates. CONDITION: In Near Fine antiquarian condition. The final two plates are missing. The remaining 48 color plates are in excellent condition. Square spine with firm hinges and joints and tight boards and pages (scarce as the boards often bow). Corners are sharp and crown and heel of spine unrubbed (scarce!) Just some rubbing and light soiling to the all white vellum (per usual). The interior is beautifully clean and free of writing, stamps and ex libris marks. Pages are crisp. One page corner bent. Minimal foxing, mostly to some of the outer page margins/edges. Text pages are a creamy white and quite striking. Comes with BOTH original yellow silk ties (VERY RARE, with one still attached!) Première édition française publiée un an après la première édition anglaise illustrée par Rackham chez Hodder & Stoughton. Tirage limité à 270 pour cette édition de luxe en reliure spéciale. Les cartonnages en papier blanc ou vélin étaient réservés aux seuls tirages de luxe des oeuvres illustrées par Arthur Rackham. Le procédé d'impression des planches couleurs a été mis au point spécifiquement pour reproduire la délicatesse des aquarelles d'Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). Un des 250 ex. sur papier (vélin) à la forme, seul grand papier après 20 exemplaires sur japon, signés par l'illustrateur. Exemplaire d'une parfaite fraicheur, tant du papier que de la reliure dont les ors sont magnifiques et le vélin exempt de taches. Seuls les fragiles liens de soie sont absents (un, détaché, conservé). // Il s'agit du premier ouvrage dont le nom de Piter Pan apparait au titre. La première occurrence du personnage de Peter Pan "who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old. and flew back to Kensington Gardens [qui s'était échappé du fait d'être un homme alors qu'il était âgé de sept jours.et s'était envolé vers les jardins de Kensington"] se trouve dans le roman "The little white bird" publié par Barrie en 1902. Barrie avait développé cette histoire et le personnage dans une pièce représentée dès 1904 "Peter Pan or The boy who would not grow up" mais qui ne fut publiée qu'en 1928. Entre-temps, en 1911, il avait adapté sa pièce en roman, publié, souvent tronqué, sous le titre de Peter Pan & Wendy.// Le Piter Pan dans les jardins de Kensington constitue l'un des chefs-d'oeuvre du "Golden age" de l'illustration anglaise. Arthur Rackham y maîtrise alors pleinement son art mêlant réalisme et fantastique, onirisme sombre et merveilleux. Ouvrage très recherché et rare dans une telle condition.
