Later issue binding of red cloth with colour panel on front showing the sphere on its way to the moon (the first issue binding design featured a rendering of a Selenite which may have been considered potentially offputting to purchasers). All edges gilt.Some (tea?) staining to pages 30 and 31. Signs of damp to edges of covers. Head and tail of spine slightly scuffed. Very good.

Premier plat avec petite illustration dans un rond central, entouré de décorations, du titre et du nom de l'auteur, gravés et dorés. Dos carré avec titre gravé et doré. Le premier plat est frotté et un peu passé, comme le dos. Le 4ème plat est muet. Coins un peu tassés et frottés. Intérieur assez frais, malgré des rousseurs éparses à quelques pages. Traduction par Henry-D Davray. Couverture, bandeaux, culs-de-lampe et magnifiques illustrations en noir et blanc in et hors par Martin Van Maele, dont il faut noter que ce livre fut le premier qu'il illustra et dont l'édition originale fut publiée en 1901 par Félix Juven, réalisant la plus belle édition illustrée de ce texte jamais publiée. Il s'agit ici de la deuxième édition, dont il existe un cartonnage vert, moins luxueux. Exemplaire en état général correct. Rarissime malgré tout.

First van Maële edition, the most desirable issue, perhaps the most extraordinary graphic realization of Wells's classic lunar novel. This copy retains the exceptionally rare dust jacket, which features an illustration that appears neither in the book nor on the binding. Van Maële's striking visualizations of the moon and its Selenite inhabitants accompany Davray's first French language translation, being one of three French editions of his version published in the same year as Wells's English original. Juven released three issues of this edition, as cited by Van Maële's bibliographer S. A. Perry: unillustrated, with black and white illustrations, and the present with colour as well as black and white illustrations. Perry notes the presence of an illustrated dust jacket, as here, on the copy of this issue he examined at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Maurice François Alfred Martin van Miële, known by his pseudonym Martin van Maële, was a self-taught freelance illustrator working in Paris and Brussels, who chiefly contributed erotic illustrations for the risqué books put out by the famous belle époque publisher Charles Carrington. In addition to his illustrations for Wells, van Maële also illustrated Juven's editions of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Juven's edition of Wells was advertised in Le Petit Temps, 21 December 1901, as "le plus amusant" ("the most amusing") of Wells's works. They add that it is "bien le récit le plus fantastique, sous des apparences de réalité, que l'on puisse rêver. De belles illustrations en noir et en coleurs de Martin van Maële le complètent" ("indeed the most fantastic story, under the guise of reality, that we could dream. Beautiful black and colour illustrations by Martin van Maële complete the work"). Wells's lunar voyage is known to have inspired Georges Méliès's famous short film, Le voyage dans la lune, which was produced from May to August 1902 and appeared that year. The present illustrated edition certainly contributed to Méliès's depiction of the moon, which takes direct inspiration from van Maële's preponderance of mushroom motifs and his distinctly insectoid Selenites. Perry comments that "this work, together with De la Terre à la lune (1902) from Jules Vernes, inspired Georges Méliès to produce the classic 1902 sci-fi silent film Le Voyage dans la lune". Perry 53. Original red cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, front cover lettered and decorated in gilt and black with a large illustration of a Selenite, rear cover decorated in black, blue-coated endpapers. With illustrated dust jacket, plain flaps wrapped around the board edges. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Some light mottling to rear board, cloth otherwise bright, fresh, and fine, light spotting to some early and late leaves only, rear hinge with some superficial cracking; jacket toned, and somewhat ruffled at ends and corners with small splits starting at folding points, rear panel a little marked and soiled: overall an exceptional copy, book near-fine and jacket very good indeed.

First edition of this long-overlooked landmark in European understanding of Buddhism, published at the "beginning of organized academic research on Asia's greatest religion" (App, p. 61). Writing in 2017, Urs App observed that, "the historiography of the discovery of our globe's spiritual continents is decidedly lagging behind that of its physical counterparts. Christian Europe's encounter with Asia's largest religion, certainly one of the most significant religio-cultural encounters in world history, is a case in point. Whereas every child is familiar with figures such as Columbus, the protagonists of the Western discovery of Buddhism tend to be unknown even to scholars of Buddhism. Thus it comes as no surprise that the first Western book about Buddhism, Michel-Jean-François Ozeray's Recherches sur Buddou. is hardly mentioned in modern studies" (p. 1). Ozeray's (1764-1859) approach is distinctive in rejecting the "etymological flights of fancy and far-flung historical or mythical speculations" (ibid., p. 16) of the orientalist William Jones and other contemporaries. He preferred instead to rely on evidence from statues, as well as the from the writings of diplomats and other secular travellers, and dozens of references to these sources pepper the text. In addition to discussing Buddhism's origins and belief systems, the author argues that it can serve as a lens through which to analyze European societies in a global context. In the preface, he states that Buddhism provides clues to "our first origins and the mass of our traditions" (quoted in ibid., p. 10). Provenance: this copy is inscribed on the half-title in French, "my forebear wrote this book in those troubled times of Waterloo and the White Terror. I offer it to Eric (formerly or still a lover of Orientalism and who knows Sanskrit) at the close of the 20th century and in testimony of a friendship that goes beyond brotherhood.
