Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good-. 590 Pages with 104 Pages of the Concordance to the Old and New Testaments by The Rev. G.K. Hannay. This wonderful and very old Bible's exterior is of leather. There are lots of worn areas on all four corners, on the top and bottom Bible edges, slightly worn areas on the front, and more worn areas on the rear cover and there is a piece of the spine missing at the top (see pictures). The gold lettering and/or designs on the front and rear covers and on the spine, (where it isn't missing on the spine) are all in very good condition as is the gold closed Bible edging and design on the closed Bible's top, right side, and bottom page edges. The interior, however, for its very old age is extremely well preserved, with no visible extraneous markings, tight bindings, and all pages in very readable and preserved condition. This wonderful old Bible will be very carefully wrapped up in padding and boxed and then shipped right away to you with insurance from here in New Jersey and comes with our utmost gratitude for your interest and for your order.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. pp. xiii, lxxxii, 1149, + Concordance [pp. 71]. Thick Heavy 4to., measuring 13" x 10". Professionally rebacked in full contemporary textured black buckram featuring gilt rules and lettering to the spine, and front board; gilt foredges, three silk ribbon-markers in yellow, green, and blue. Fresh endpapers. Bright, elaborately decorated title page, colour frontispiece, accompanied with one coloured map, and nineteen additional full-colour plates depicting various Biblical scenes; all collated, and accounted for. Text organized into two to three columns with extensive commentary housed in a separate row. Remarkably well-preserved, and professionally rebound the extremities are entirely free of any flaws. With the exception of a touch of chipping to the outer edges of the first, and last page the contents remain bright, clean, and unmarked. A most handsome presentation of one of the most popular Bibles to emerge in the Victorian era and by far the most consequential, and lasting work of the Rev. John Brown. The date of publication for this edition appears to be somewhat in dispute with sources listing it variously as being published as early as 1862 to as late as 1885; we believe the latter to be the most probable date of publication. Our offering corresponds most to OCLC #221664504, with no holdings of this title at the British Library at time of cataloguing.

Marbled endpapers and paper edges. Ribbon marker. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Moses protected with a tissue-guard. Additional engraved title hand-colored. Text in two columns. Binding signed by Blackie and Son*. Moderate and sporadic rubbing on binding. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. * Blackie and Son was founded in 1809 by John Blackie, snr. (1782-1874) as a partnership with two others and was originally known as 'Blackie, Fullarton and Company'. It began printing in 1819 and was renamed 'Blackie and Son' in 1831, becoming a public limited company in 1890. The business had quarters at 16/18 William IV Street, Charing Cross, London and 17 Stanhope Street, Glasgow, Scotland, and opened offices in both Canada and India. The company ceased publishing in 1991. Blackie and Son initially published books sold by subscription, including religious texts and reference books. Later the firm published single volumes, particularly educational texts and children's books, taking advantage of compulsory education from 1870. Notable books from The Kennett Library, a graded series of classics retold for schools, include: Kidnapped, Little Women, Westward Ho!, The Black Arrow, Wuthering Heights and Ben-Hur. The firm published the many Flower Fairy books of Cicely Mary Barker beginning in 1923. In 1902, Walter Blackie commissioned the building of a new house on a plot at Helensburgh to the West of Glasgow. At the invitation of their illustrator Talwin Morris, the architect was his friend Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This house became Hill House, regarded as one of Mackintosh's finest works.
