Leben: Schon in seiner Jugend hatte Raymond Queneau Kontakt zu den französischen Surrealisten. 1949 gehörte er zu den ersten Unterzeichnern des Manifestes des Collège de Pataphysique (Künstlergruppe 'Pataphysik'), das auf den Dichter und Dramatiker Alfred Jarry zurückgeht. In der Folge gründete er zusammen mit François Le Lionnais die Künstlerbewegung OuLiPo, der auch die Schriftsteller Georges Perec und Italo Calvino angehörten. Gleichzeitig arbeitete er als Direktor der Encyclopédie de la Pléiade für den angesehenen Verlag Gallimard. 1951 wurde er Mitglied der Académie Goncourt. Mit seinem 1959 erschienen und 1960 von Louis Malle verfilmten Roman Zazie dans le métro" (Zazie in der Metro, deutsche Erstaufführung am 23. She is under the supervision of her creepy Uncle Gabriel. 1960 film version by Louis Malle starring Philippe Noiret as Gabriel. Queneau was associated with the Surrealists until he fell out with Breton. He was also a member of the Democratic Communist Circle and Marxist/Leninist organization in France. He supported the antifascist movements publishing pamphlets during the Nazi Occupation and the Spanish Civil War.

From the original French, full of the word-play, argot and witticisms Queneau was known for, this was also a difficult book to translate, and has been done so marvellously here. There isa hint of tanning to page and text block edges and in the jacket,spine is sunned or discoloured with a little discolouration to top and bottom edges. A little grubby to rear.
